Bailout Breakdown

Here's a great image I found in an online San Francisco newspaper that gives the breakdown of the bailout.

A better version can be found ... here.

Attacks in Mumbai

I'm sure most of you are aware of the attacks that went on in Mumbai.  Here's a great article from the BBC describing the 'terrorists'.

I'll go ahead and clue you in on what the eyewitnesses claimed they 'saw' -- not that I trust anything I ever see or hear, how can I trust what other people see or hear?

Anyway, the description accounts for the terrorists are :

Gaffar Abdul Amir, an Iraqi tourist from Baghdad, says he saw at least two men who started the firing outside the Leopold Cafe.

He was returning to his hotel from the seaside with a friend when he saw two men carrying bags and brandishing AK-47s walking in front of them, shooting.

“They did not look Indian, they looked foreign. One of them, I thought, had blonde hair. The other had a punkish hairstyle. They were neatly dressed,” says Mr Amir.

And we have the other description as :

Then, the “foreign looking, fair skinned” men, as Mr Mishra remembers them, simply carried on killing.

Great stuff, doncha think?

Update

Well.  I officially have a week off of school.  I have a whole slew of things on my list to get done.

Among them include :

Studying for my quals -- Algebra and Real Analysis
Homework                -- Algebra and Real Analysis
Grading                     -- Oh goodness, I have about a stack of papers 2 inches thick to grade.  Way behind on that.
Buying food stuffs for Turkey Day -- I'm in charge of a dessert (?) -- I think I'll build me a pie
Buying other food stuffs
Buying the wooden posts needed for a garden in my backyard -- the compost heap is coming in nicely
Getting more leaves for the compost heap -- I may be too late for that
Clean the House -- Room, laundry, computer room
Get a ski pass.

I think that's it.  Oh yeah.  And figure out what I'm going to take next semester, work on a computer program that generates random music (from specified chords and length of chords), and eat.

School and stuff

I've been doing a lot of school work lately (duh).  Such is the nature of grad school.  It's not so bad, though.  I have to teach every day but Thursdays at 8:00 A.M.  I teach Calculus I.  It's a blast.  But since I'm up already by then, I tend to stay the entire day in my office doing work (and by day ... I am always there til 3--if I'm lucky--or I leave around 5).  Homework, grading, lesson plans, and of course surfing of the internet all take up my day.  I also am always listening to Pandora on my computer.

It's great, I got a Linux box at my desk now.  I can do all the things I need to do at school with it.  The only side effect is that some documents (mainly MSWord documents) that are sent to me for quizzes, calculator labs, etc. don't have a good converter to open source programs that keep the mathematical notation intact.  I'm quite upset that someone doesn't go ahead and switch them over to a Tex document (not that I'm volunteering for that ... don't have the time!).  I suppose I could always use the free pdf converter tool for MSWord Documents to PDF.  I forget the site now, but I think that'll be my solution.

Other than that ... all my classes are going great (except Analysis? I dunno... we'll see not this Monday but the following Monday during the test).  I'd have to say Combinatorics is the funnest ... not that I like the subject the most (it's fun), but that the teacher makes it engaging.  My analysis teacher drones on (he's 'semi-retired' and only picked up teaching the course b/c no one else did) and my Algebra teacher is good, too, but sometimes it seems we go slow in that class (which is fine, I suppose).  She likes to do LOTS of examples so we can see what's going on with all the group actions and quotient group stuff.  But all that homework has been straightforward ... lots of tedious work, but just chug along and it's done.

That's it.  Nothing else too exciting.  I'm making wine today with some of my friends.  There are grape vines on the property I'm renting, so I figure I better put them to use!

New Blog

Hello everyone,

I just thought I'd let you know that I have been sitting on a domain name for quite some time and have finally got WordPress installed on my blog.  The new site is called www.sloppyjournalism.com .  I have yet to really have any entries.  Be on the lookout for more soon!

Matt
